Texas ( /ˈtɛksəs/ (help·info)) is the second-largest U.S. state in both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States. The name, meaning "friends" or "allies" in Caddo, was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas. Located in the South Central United States, Texas is bordered by Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km), and a growing population of 24.7 million residents.

Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while Dallas–Fort Worth and Houston are the fourth- and sixth-largest United States metropolitan areas, respectively. Other major cities include San Antonio, El Paso, and Austin—the state capital. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as an independent republic and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today.

Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes that resemble both the American South and the Southwest. Although Texas is popularly associated with the Southwestern deserts, less than 10% of the land area is desert. Most of the population centers are located in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend. Due to its long history as a center of the American cattle industry, Texas is associated with the image of the cowboy.

The term "six flags over Texas" came from the several nations that had rule over the territory. Spain was the first European country to claim the area of Texas. France held a short-lived colony in Texas. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845 it joined the United States as the 28th state. The state's annexation set off a chain of events that caused the Mexican–American War in 1846. Texas declared its secession from the United States in early 1861, joining the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war and its restoration to the Union, Texas entered a long period of economic stagnation.

In the early 1900s, oil discoveries initiated an economic boom in the state. Texas has since economically diversified. Today it has more Fortune 500 companies than any other U.S. state. With a growing base of industry, the state is a leader in many, including agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. It leads the nation in export revenue since 2002 and has the second-highest gross state product.

How is the Texas Longhorns playing the Oklahoma Sooners in Dallas, Texas considered a nuetral site?
Q. If Texas gets to play in the State of Texas that seems like an unfair advantage.
Asked by maevansjr - Sun Nov 30 09:46:19 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's when they split the tickets between the 2 schools. If half the stadium is filled with Oklahoma fans and half is filled with Texas fans it is equal in terms of fans of both. It's done to give each team equal support and it keeps the team who plays in that state from having a home crowd advantage. The game between Georgia and Florida in Jacksonville, Florida is the same. The stadiums in both situations are considered the best sites for the annual rivalries.

A. If you filed home owners insurance, you are in the wrong place to ask, this is car insurance. If it was indeed your car you're asking about, are you a qualified body shop?

When a Texas resident has an auto accident in Minnesota- a no fault insurance state?
Q. A Texas resident has an accident in Minnesota- a no fault insurance state, and the Minnesotan is the one who is at fault, How does insurance companies handle this when Texas law are different than Minnesotas. There were no bodily injuries.
Asked by kayline - Sun May 11 23:17:23 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In every state except Michigan the term "No-Fault" refers only to how and who pays the medical of an injured person. It means that no matter who is at-fault your own insurance company pays your medical bills. Who pays for car damages in MN are still based on negligence. The accident will be handled under the laws of MN as that is where the accident happened. So if the other driver is at-fault you will get paid for your car damages by their insurance company. In MN the have comparative negligence laws so depending on the accident facts you might not be owed 100% of your damages. If you contributed 15% of the negligence to the accident, the amount you can collect is reduced by that 15%. Good Luck

A Texan outside of Texas is a foreigner. When a Texas team takes the field against a foreign state, it is an army with banners.

  • One objection I have heard voiced to works of this kind—dealing with Texas—is the amount of gore spilled across the pages. It can not be otherwise. In order to write a realistic and true history of any part of the Southwest, one must narrate such things, even at the risk of monotony.
  • When MacNab blanched, no more stunned than I, Rusk rose and put his arm about his shoulders: "Never forget, son, when you represent Texas, always go first class."
  • Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word. And there’s an opening convey of generalities. A Texan outside of Texas is a foreigner.
