East Texas is a distinct geographic and ecological area in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the East Texas area "may be separated from the rest of Texas roughly by a line extending from the Red River in north central Lamar County southwestward to east central Limestone County and then southeastward to Galveston Bay", though some separate the Gulf Coast area into a separate region. This area includes all or parts of 49 counties, totaling almost 40,000 square miles (100,000 km) and a population of almost 6 million. Another popular, somewhat simpler, definition defines East Texas as the region between Interstate 45 as the western border linking Dallas and Houston, the Louisiana Border as the eastern border, the Oklahoma/Texas border as the northern border, and Galveston Bay shores as the southern border. Most of the region consists of the Piney Woods ecoregion, and East Texas can sometimes be reduced to include only the Piney Woods. Houston has distanced itself from East Texas over the past fifty years and is today more associated with the Coastal Bend along the Gulf of Mexico; however Houston has been considered part of East Texas for most of the city's history. At the fringes, towards central Texas, the forests expand outward toward sparser trees and eventually into open plains. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "East Texas" What are the very large black cats that people sometimes see here in East Texas? Q. Periodically people claim that they have seen a very large mountain lion like mammal here in East Texas, but he is black. I didn't think much of these sightings until an extremely credible individual that I know saw one cross the highway while going to work one morning. He works at a school in the back woods here in East Texas. He indicated that the large cat was chasing a large dog, and that they disappeared in the woods. I know mountain lions do not have a black form. We live in Northeast Texas. What species of mammal would this most likely be? I have a couple of ideas, but want to know what others think. I asked my brother again about the incident on the cat he saw. The dog that the large cat was chasing was hit by a car, in… [cont.] Asked by madcat - Fri Aug 3 23:40:24 2007 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments A. could be a jaguar Answered by Love not hate - Fri Aug 3 23:44:04 2007 Does anyone know of an effective way to get rid of mistletoe in East Texas?
