Does a state tax refund take longer to get back than a federal?
Q. I'm from ND and I finled my taxes by E-file. I've received my federal refund on Good Friday, but I haven't gotten my state back yet. Has this happened to anyone else? I checked my status on our state tax commissioner website and it says it's been received and being processed. Do state refunds usually take longer than a federal?

What are the Federal and State Income Tax rates/slabs for the State of New Jersey?
Q. I recently got my paycheck and there were a lot of tax deductions. Being on my OPT i dont have the Social Security or Medicare tax cut. But my Federal and State Income(NJ) tax deductions were huge. Please could anybody guide me so that I may be able to plan my finances accordingly. Thanks to "laura" who help me in this. But I am sorry to say i am not able to figure out the exact amount. So here are the deductions i got in my paycheck. Earnings per month : $ 4928 Federal Income (deduction) : $ 739.20 NJ State Income (deduction): $ 197.12 Please tell me if these deductions are correct. This is for the state of New Jersey. Thanks.

A. The best advice for you is to drop into a tax preparation office with your pay stub. I know H&R Block will do the calculations for you, to help you "so that I may be able to plan my finances accordingly." There are too many unknowns for me to calculate... -# of pay periods... -std deductions or Sch. A? -# of dependants? -Married...? Good luck

Since state laws and penalties can vary a significantly, do you think justice is really being served?
Q. For instance, possession of less than an once of Marijuana in one state is a minor (I didn't use the term class and number because that also varies from state to state) misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $50.00; across the border; the same crime is punishable by up to five years in the state penitentiary ( and sentences of that length are common). Is there a Constitutional issue? Or should the states be able to impose any penalty they choose?

A. Hey Morgan R, I'm still new @ this, & have tried to get in touch. I'll keep trying. Since I live in Canada, I know in the U.S. that the laws vary State to State. That question is a yes & no for me. If one State has a higher crime rate in Drugs, it would make more sense for their Laws to be tougher for the users/buyers compared to a State that has a higher crime rate in Prostituition. Also it wouldn't seem fair if one State only gave X amount of time/fine, & another State gave twice as much for the same instance. But on the other hand it sure would make things a heck of alot easier if ALL Laws were the same everywhere because at least you'd know what the consequence was. But I don't think that States should be able to impose any penalty. [cont.]
